This circumcision ritual in the 19th century has become routine surgical practice that is influenced by reports that linked it with miraculous cures for:
a. hernias,
b. insanity, paralysis, epilepsy,
c. masturbation,
d. headache,
e. strabismus,
f. hydrocephalus,
g. clubfoot,
h. asthma,
i. enuresis, rectal prolapse,
j. gout.

Historically circumcision has been used for hygienic reasons, as a rite of passage to manhood, as a mark of cultural identity (similar to a tattoo), or as a ceremonial offering to the gods.

Why is the Circumcision Performed?

Circumcision is frequently performed in healthy boys for cultural or religious reasons.

A newborn boy in USA is frequently circumcised before he is discharged from the hospital.

Circumcision is performed on Jewish boys when they are 8 days old.

Circumcision is not frequently done in the general population of Europe, Asia, and South and Central America.

The advantages of circumcision are not always thought to outweigh its disadvantages.

Doctors’ opinions about the indications for circumcision in healthy boys may not be the same.

Having an intact foreskin is believed to permitting the patient a more natural sexual response during adulthood.

The health benefits and risks of circumcision must be considered by families in light of their own personal and cultural preferences.

The medical benefits by themselves may not outweigh those risks.

Research has indicated that uncircumcised male infants have a higher risk of some diseases such as:

1. Cancer of the penis
2. Certain sexually transmitted diseases
3. Infections of the penis
4. Phimosis (tightness of the foreskin that prevents it from retracting)
5. Urinary tract infections
