This Dictionary of Johnson’s 1,500 Quotes is based on the two sources. One is the concordance at the end of the index volume of Boswell’s Life of Johnson in six volumes compiled by G. B. Hill, and the other is the collection of words and their illustrations, which are selected and translated into Japanese by me in Johnson and the Emergence of National Dictionary (in Japanese) which is to be published in Spring, 2014. The head-words from the former source are capitalized in the following dictionary, and the numbers of volume and page are also shown after each quotation. And those from the latter are printed in bold type, and the names of the works are shown at the end of each illustration.
