Die Charaktere spielen auf Vorstellungen an, die mit diesen Mächten assoziiert werden, und berufen sich auf sie. King Lear setzt sich von Shakespeares anderen Werken insofern ab, als dass in dieser Tragödie die Bezüge auf die Glücksgöttin Fortuna und die Sterne eine noch zentralere Rolle einnehmen. Dieser Sachverhalt kann schon anhand der außergewöhnlich hohen Zahl der Bezüge auf sie aufgezeigt werden. Die vorliegende Arbeit wird sich damit beschäftigen, wie die Konzeption der Fortuna und der Sterne im dramatischen Kontext eingesetzt werden. Dabei soll herausgearbeitet werden, inwiefern die Konzeption der beiden Schicksalsmächte dazu beiträgt, die Darstellung des tragischen Schicksals der Protagonisten zu unterstützen. Gerade King Lear überschreitet den Rahmen der poetic justice, des angemessenen Verhältnisses von Fehlern der Charaktere und der daraus resultierenden Konsequenzen. Dadurch werden die Ereignisse nicht mehr auf moralischer Basis erklärbar und schließen das Verderben von Schuldlosen wie von Schuldigen gleichermaßen mit ein. Die Ursache hinter den Ereignissen wird in Gestalt der Schicksal stiftenden Mächte, insbesondere als Wirken von Fortuna und den Sternen, visualisiert.
